I own the drd480re, the guide system is super fast, unlike the newer version drd485rg.
Picture quality is great, only draw back is that according to dtv non-800 tech support, this unit is only upgradeable via RCA, which is why I switched my main unit to the drd485rg. In other words, DTV has little control over the guide system. you will not see new logos to the channel banner on the drd480re.
With the new drd485rg, DTV can at their discrection, upgrade the guide (example, the drd485rg came shipped without a logo in the channel banner for channels WB,UPN VH1 classics, these logos have now been added via dtv to the channel banner) If this is not important to you, then by all means this is a great reciever, keep in mind though, it will never be upgraded via DTV only through rca, and we all know how cheap and lame rca is.

I have also replaced a Sony SAT-A55. The sony ran much too hot, almost melted my card, had very slow channel changing. 32 bits? Could have fooled me, more like 16. The RCA on the other hand runs much cooler, has better color reproduction and clarity and has interactive cabilities, giving you more information on a program you are watching or the option to purchase an item or get more info on it, right from your recliner.

I also replaced a Sony A55 with this unit. So far, so good. Picture is better, surfing is quicker, runs cooler which is something I did not get with Sony, it almost melted my program card. I like the RCA, and has more features than my previous unit.

I just replaced my SONY SAT-A55 Dolby Digital receiver with this one because the programming guide was halting on the Sony. The RCA is much snappier and a pleasure to live with.
